Commonly Used Visas for Employment and Business Purposes in the U.S.

H-1B - Temporary employment for a petitioning U.S. employer within a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelors degree or the equivalent

H-2B - Seasonal and other temporary workers coming to perform jobs for which U.S. workers are in short supply

H-3 - Non-academic and non-medical trainees

TN - Professionals from Canada and Mexico whose field of employment is on the NAFTA Professional Job Series List and who possess the minimum education requirements or alternative credentials

E-1 - Supervisors, executives and those with specialized knowledge from countries with treaties of commerce and navigation with the U.S. and who are coming to carry on substantial trade in goods or services, principally between the U.S. and treaty country

E-2 - Investors who are nationals from treaty countries coming to direct operations of a real business enterprise in which the foreign investor has made a substantial investment

L-1A - Managers and executives of international companies being transferred from operations abroad to a parent, branch, subsidiary or affiliate located in the U.S.

L-1B - Employees of international companies with specialized or advanced knowledge unique to the company that is generally not found throughout a particular industry

B-1 - Required of nationals from countries which are not participants in the Visa Waiver Program, and all persons coming for more than 90 days, who will engage in business related activities such as contract negotiations, attendance at meetings or conventions, consideration of investment opportunities, litigation, or other business purpose provided no salary or other earnings are paid from a U.S. source

O-1 - Persons who have extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business or athletics, or extraordinary achievements in the motion picture and television field.

P-1 - Individual or team athletes, or members of internationally recognized entertainment groups

P-2 - Artists or entertainers coming to the U.S. under a reciprocal exchange program

P-3 - Artists or entertainers coming to perform under a culturally unique program
